Abstract

A nuclear fuel structure consists of metal inner and outer tubes forming an annular constant narrow space between them. The space is filled with enriched uranium. The metal of the tubes is an alloy of zirconium and stainless steel. The uranium fuel may be a thin leaf or a powder. The structure may have a central rod forming an inner passage through which cooling fluid flows. The molybdenum 99 is used e.g. in the radio-pharmaceutical industry. The structure is more efficient and less costly to operate than known appts. It provides a small, safe and simple nuclear reactors for use as neutron generators and as sources of small amounts of energy.
