Abstract

1420589 Nuclear reactors A P PEDRICK 13 July 1974 31124/74 Heading G6C The core 3 of a gas-cooled reactor is contained in a cylinder 3<SP>1</SP> with clearance 8 down which coolant gas flows before flowing upwardly through the core, so that the core can distort if it overheats without engaging its container and impeding the free fall of the core down shaft 3<SP>11</SP>. The reactor is in other respects as described in Specification 1,420,626, except that the core is also partly supported by the lugs of solenoids 13, which can be withdrawn to drive the core on to control rods 9; further solenoids 12<SP>11</SP> can release the base plate 12 of the control rods to permit the core to fall down the shaft.
