Abstract

This invention relates to an apparatus for the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels or fertile materials containing uranium or plutonium or thorium, characterized in that it is formed at least in part of hafnium or a hafhium alloy, such part thereby exhibiting high corrosion resistance, high neutron capture cross section, and good forming and welding characteristics. The hafnium or alloy may be a coating on steel or titanium or may itself be coated with enamel or ceramic. The apparatus is especially suited for use in the continuous multi-stage extractive separation of compounds also involving electrolytic reduction.
