Abstract

892,341. Nuclear reactors. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. Sept. 23, 1958 [Oct. 16, 1957], No. 30373/58. Class 39(4) A fuel element or breeding element for a nuclear reactor consists of one or more shaped elements comprising the monocarbide of uranium, plutonium, or thorium or a mixture of two or all of these monocarbides, and a corrosion-resistant and impervious protective can, wherein a layer is arranged between the can and the shaped element or elements, the layer being a thin layer of one or more carbides or silicides of uranium or of one of the elements of the 4th to 6th groups of the Periodic Table except hafnium and tantalum; if the layer is a carbide a metallic binder may be included, the metal being beryllium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, titanium, vanadium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, bismuth, nickel, iron or chromium in amounts of 1 to 50% by weight, preferably 5 to 15%. Thin layers of the metals iron, nickel, beryllium, silicon, zinc, chromium, aluminium, titanium vanadium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum or bismuth or an alloy of these metals can be applied with the carbide or silicide layer. Several layers may be superimposed, for example of carbide, silicide and metal.
