Abstract

754,559. Coating with metals; cementation. ZBOROWSKI, H. P. G. A. R. VON. March 26, 1954 [March 31, 1953], No. 8863/54. Classes 72 and 82(2). [Also in Groups XIII, XXVI, XXXIII and XL(a)] Anuclear reactor has walls R of fissionable material. with a mass 1À1 to 2 times the critical mass with thermal neutrons, and means for circulating a moderator fluid between the walls so that it changes from a liquid at inlet to a gas at outlet and provides a normal neutron multiplication factor of 1. The reactors use U<SP>235</SP> or Pu<SP>239</SP> or U<SP>238</SP> enriched with Pu<SP>239</SP> and U<SP>233</SP>, with water, heavy water, purified water, a hydrocarbon, or a mixture of water and alcohol or methanol as moderator and working fluid. The reactors may have a protective coating of chromium oxide, bismuth oxide, silicon oxide, silicon carbide, tungsten, tungsten carbide, tantalum, tantalum carbide, zirconium or zirconium oxide. The carbides have the advantage of improving adhesion of the coating by forming uranium or plutonium carbide.
