Abstract
A uranium rod which is to be sealed in a metal can to serve as a fuel element in a nuclear reactor is provided first with a coating of nickel and then with a coating of niobium. The nickel coating should be 0.001 inches thick and may be applied by the thermal decomposition of nickel carbonyl or by electro-deposition. The niobium coating is applied by passing a mixture of hydrogen and a vapour of a volatile halide of niobium, e.g. petachloride, over the heated nickel-coated rod. The can may be of aluminium or steel.
