Abstract

Fuel pellets consisting of uranium carbide are coated in a fluidised bed with a thin layer of zirconium or vanadium. This acts as a getter and prevents the transfer of carbon to the steel can. The space between pellets and can is filled by sodium or another metal which is liquid at the reactor temp.
