Abstract
1,250,687. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 2 Oct., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 48444/69. Heading G6C. A fuel element can is provided with a diffusion barrier consisting of a suspension of graphite in nitrocellulose by applying a suspension of graphite in a nitrocellulose solution to that surface of the can which is intended to come into contact with the fuel, and heating the can so coated to a temperature high enough to eliminate the nitrocellulose solvent. The fuel may be U or U-alloy in a can of Mg or Mg-alloy, or a U-oxide based ceramic fuel in a can of Zr or Zr-alloy. The barrier serves to prevent diffusion of Pu and fission products which form during irradiation of the fuel through the can at operating temperatures. In the case of U-oxide fuel, the barrier also prevents diffusion of O 2 from the fuel into the can. In a particular example, a suspension was prepared from 150 g. colloidal graphite/litre of a solution containing 45 c.c. nitrocellulose, 25 c.c. butyl alcohol and 930 c.c. butyl acetate. This suspension was used to coat the interior of a Zr-1À5 wt. per cent Cu alloy fuel can by being passed through the can four times, each followed by air-drying. The can coated in this way was heated in a vacuum of 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr at 400 C. for 2 hours. This process gave a barrier having a total thickness of 15 microns. The diffusion barrier may alternatively be deposited on the outer surface of the fuel.
