Abstract

1,144,033. Metal oxides. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 24 Feb. 1967, No. 8915/67. Heading C1A. Metal oxide fibres, textiles and shapes are produced by a method which comprises (1) impregnating a preformed organic polymeric material with a compound of one or more of the metals as defined in the Specification Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Sc, Y, La, Ce, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Al, Ga, Si, Sn, Pb, Th, U and plutonium, and (2) heating said impregnated material to a temperature sufficiently high to carbonize and oxidize the organic material and convert the metal compound to metal oxide, at least a portion of the heating step being carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere, and the heating step being carried out without ignition of the material. The material may be impregnated by immersion in a solvent solution containing the metal compound and excess solution is removed from the organic material which is then dried prior to the carbonization-oxidation step. Any cellulosic material may be used and other suitable organic materials include the protein materials, such as wool and silk, the man-made acrylics, polyesters, vinyls and polyurethanes. Shrinkage in all dimensions takes place during the process yielding a metal oxide product with essentially the same physical configuration as the original polymeric material. Controlled reaction conditions are employed to avoid ignition of the organic material during the carbonization-oxidation step e.g. (1) cellulosic fibres impregnated with metal salts are heated to a temperature between 350 and 900‹ C. at a rate of not more than 100‹ C. per hour in an atmosphere containing from about 5 to 25 volume % oxygen, provided the temperature does not exceed the melting or decomposition temperature of the metal oxide (ii) heating impregnated fibrous materials in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to temperatures between 600 and 1000‹ C. in less than one hour followed by heating in the same temperature range in an atmosphere containing at least 5 volume % water vapour until oxidation of the material is substantially complete. Other controlled reaction conditions are described. The fibres can be maintaind under tension during the carbonization-oxidation step.
