Abstract
1281878 Fuel elements BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 29 Aug 1969 [11 Oct 1968] 48216/68 Heading G6C A fuel element of the kind having one or more fuel pins, each pin comprising coated particles of fuel consisting of or including U-238 contained within a sealed tube of SiC, is provided within the tube of the or each fuel pin with a central core of moderator material, e.g. graphite, the coated fuel particles being contained within the annular space between the core and the tube. The fuel particles may consist of enriched UO 2 kernels with pyrolytic carbon coatings. The rate of conversion of U- 238 into Pn-239 can be adjusted to any desired value within a wide range by suitable choice of fuel, coating, tube and core dimensions.
