Abstract

1,213,126. Container closures. EARLE METALLISING CO. Ltd. 21 Dec., 1967 [22 Dec., 1966], No. 57384/66. Heading B8T. A plug 1, e.g. of plastics, for a container 21, comprises an outer annulus 2 which seals against the upper end of the container neck, and an inner annulus 7 defining a central pouring opening 8 above the level of the outer annulus. An integral bridging member 11 forms an intermediate trough 12 which catches any spillage, the inwardly sloping top surface 10 of the annulus 7 minimizing dripping. After inserting the plug member 1 into the container neck a screw cap 14 is pressed on to the neck until the threads 15, 22 engage. Three fins 13 extending from the outer annulus 2 of the plug 1 into the trough 12 engage an inner annular skirt 18 within the cap. Rotation of the cap leads to sealing of a central protuberance 16 in the cap against the upper surface of the annulus 7 with simultaneous impingement of an annular rib 19 within the cap against the upper surface of the plug member 1, further rotation forcing the plug member into the container neck until an annular rim 3 on the plug 1 impinges on the upper surface of the container neck 20. Once the sealing arrangement has been thus assembled with the plug member 1 permanently located within the container neck 20, the screw cap is operated conventionally. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), improved sealing is achieved by modification of the co-operating surface profiles.
