A jack for a motor vehicle comprises a bar 13 to engage a socket in a vehicle and pivotally mounted on a nut 11 threaded on a spindle 15 in a pillar 14. A stop 4 limits pivotal movement of the bar 13. A toothed disc fitted over and welded to the top of the spindle 15 forms a spur gear 3 in mesh with a crown wheel 5 formed by pressing from a toothed disc. The crown wheel 5 is mounted on a handle 7 used to operate the jack.
