Apparatus for screwing up and unscrewing screws comprises a shaft 4 rotatable by a handle 1 or a motor, an adaptor 5 for engaging the screw, and a gauge 10 for indicating the torque applied. Shaft 4 is mounted in a body 6 rotatably carried in a chassis 7, and the shaft is rotated through gears 2, 3. A stop 8 is fixed on to body 6 and co-operates with an hydraulic piston 9, to provide a resistance to the applied torque, the value of which is indicated on gauge 10. A second stop is provided at the opposite end of piston 9, so as to oppose the torque during unscrewing.
