Abstract

954,525. Screw Jacks. R. T. SHELLEY Ltd. March 5, 1963 [April 17, 1962], No. 14751/62. Heading B8J. The bearing for the spigot 29 of a bevel pinion 23 in a side lift jack is formed by a pressing 31 welded to the web of a channel section pillar 10. A shallow recess 24 is pressed in the web of the pillar to partly house the pinion 23, and a spigot portion 25 of a bevel wheel 22 fixed on a screwed spindle 12 is received in a plunged opening in a plate 26 secured across the upper end of the pillar. The plate has lugs 27 which are secured in the flanges of the pillar. A downwardly turned flange 28 of the plate protects the bevel wheel. Trunnions 15 on a nut 16 which engages the screwed spindle 12 extend into grooves 11 formed in the flanges of the pillar. The trunnions carry a U-shaped pressing 14 to which is welded a bar 13 by which a vehicle is raised and lowered. The spigot 29 of the pinion 23 is formed with an axial recess of non-circular cross-section to receive the complementary shaped end 32 of a handle 33. Alternatively the spigot may be carried through the outer end of the pressing 31 and made of suitable cross-section to receive a socket on a handle.
