Abstract

487,590. Turning. NAGASAWA, K. Jan. 26, 1938, No. 2527. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe tailstock comprises a sliding head 2, Fig. 1, carrying a centre 4 at its front end and provided with a rack 5 on its underside, sliding in a base 1, a worm 11, operated by a handle 15, being adapted to be brought into or out of engagement with a worm-wheel 7, Fig. 3, which frictionally engages a gear wheel 6 meshing with the rack on the sliding head. The worm 11, which is mounted in a drop-housing 14, is released from the worm-wheel when making a rough adjustment of the sliding head and is subsequently engaged and clamped in position by a handle 16 before the fmal fine adjustment. Frictional engagement between the worm-wheel 7, Fig. 3, and the gear wheel 6 is maintained by a spring 9 and this may be varied according to the load at which slip is desired to occur, by adjusting the nut 10.
