Abstract
121,161. Bamber, H. W. Nov. 30, 1917. Producers.-The water-supply for a gas-producer is automatically controlled by interconnecting its valve with the gas-egress valve, or with the throttle valve of the engine. As shown in Fig. 1, the throttle valve e of an interna.l-combustion engine on a car is connected to a lever g which is connected by a spring ! i to a hook j on a lever-arm l which overhangs a spindle o<1> of a valve o. In the closed position of the valve e, a fixed arm on the lever l prevents the lever from contacting with the spindle o<1>, and so the valve o is allowed to open under the pressure of water admitted by a pipe s from a pump to a passage r, and the water escapes by a passage p without passing to the producer. When the valve e is opened, the lever g puts the spring i under tension, and the lever 1 acts on the. valve stem o' and tends to close valve o, thereby allowing a ball or spring-pressed valve t to be opened by the pressure of water in the passage r. The water is supplied to the producer by way of a passage u, the amount of passage depending on the degree to which the valve e is opened. In a modification, the throttle valve 6, Fig. 4, and the watersupply valve 7 which controls the flow from a cistern 1 to a float chamber 3, are interconnected by link mechanism as shown. The chamber 3 supplies a small boiler 10, and when the throttle is closed, the water in the boiler and the chamber 3 are evaporated before the generation of gas ceases. On re-starting, the producer is not cooled by the immediate introduction of water, owing to the time taken in re-filling the tank 3 and boiler 10.
