Apparatus to determine the yield value or the amount of shear stress a liquid may withstand without deformation comprises, a thermostatic bath 20 holding a tube 22 containing a sample liquid 19 and a thermometer 21, a thin flat plate or drag detector 10 attached by rod 12 to a balance 11, and a permanent magnet 15 which is attracted by a solenoid 16 energized through an ammeter 18, which meter indicates the current necessary to cause initial movement of the detector 10 and may be marked in yield values. The apparatus may also be used to measure the temperature at which the yield value achieves a specific value by first cooling the liquid and then adjusting the ammeter 18 to read for the particular value required. The temperature is then raised and as soon as the magnet 15 moves the thermometer 21 is read.
