Abstract

1,171,181. Measuring physical dimensions. SNAM PROGETTI S.p.A. Jan. 3, 1967, No. 407/67. Heading G1N. A dilatometer comprises a quartz tube containing the test sample the change in length of which with temperature is measured by a differential transformer 3 actuated through a quartz push-rod, Fig. 3 (not shown). The sample may be under vacuum and push-rod 9 enables the zero of the transformer to be adjusted through a vacuum seal. The sample can be placed in either molten lead or other salt in a first furnace, or in a second furnace the temperature of which may be cycled. The output of the differential transformer is rectified and recorded.
