Abstract

1,089,286. Determining the pour-point of a liquid. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. June 17, 1966 [July 20, 1965], No. 30844/65. Heading G1S. Apparatus for detecting the pour-point of a liquid 2 comprises a mercury thermometer 8 bent at right angles and mounting at one end a disc 10, the thermometer being freely suspended in the liquid 2 from a strip 5 e. g. of berylliumcopper alloy, and counter-balanced by a weight 11. A vane 6 is attached to the strip 5 and extends between a photo-cell detector 12 positioned adjacent an electromagnet 13. In use, a cooling unit 3 is set in operation, and a current passed through the electromagnet 13 at five minute intervals, moving the vane 6 in the path of photo-cell detector 12. When the liquid reaches its pourpoint temperature, movement of vane 6 is halted, as the disc 10 is no longer freely movable in the setting liquid. In a modification, see Figs. 2-4 (not shown) a movable vane is attached by brackets to a copper-beryllium suspension tape which is attached by further brackets to the instrument support. In this case, a platinum resistance thermometer is used.
