Abstract

1493527 Measuring fluid-flow and viscosity J L SPENCER and R I PEARLMAN 7 April 1975 [7 May 1974] 14164/75 Heading G1N The rate of flow of fluid through a conduit 10 (Fig. 1) is measured by the current required for electromagnets 13, 14 to raise a ferromagnetic ball 11 against the fluid-flow force and gravity from a rest position P i on a stop element 12. At the start of the test a current generator 18 is energized to feed an increasing current to the electromagnets 13, 14. When the ball 11 leaves the stop element 12 a light beam from source 15 passes through the transparent conduit 10 to reach a detector 16, which causes a logic circuit 17 to sample the instantaneous value of the energizing current and send a corresponding signal to a read out device 19. A digital mode for measuring the energizing current is also described. The ball 11 may be stainless steel, or plastic or glass with a soft iron core. The movement sensor 15, 16 may alternatively be a variable capacitor or inductor altering the frequency of an oscillator, or strain gauge elements attached to the stop element 12, or the ball and stop elements may be used as switch contacts. In another embodiment Fig. 4 for increasing fluid viscosity, the flow-rate is maintained constant and the movable member 111 is specially shaped to maintain laminar flow, whereby the energizing current required to move member 111 is a measure of the fluid viscosity.
