1, 244, 408. Viscometers. ROSEMOUNT ENG. CO. Ltd. Jan. 27, 1970 [March 5, 1969], No. 11802/ 69. Headings G1A, G1N and G1S. In a viscometer in which a rotatable member 12 incorporating a permanent magnet 17 is driven in a flowing fluid 11 by a rotating magnetic field which acts on the permanent magnet the angular displacement of the member 12 with respect to the rotating field is measured. The rotating magnetic field may be provided, as shown, by a permanent magnet 18 rotated at a uniform speed, or by a rotating electromagnetic or electrically with an alternating current. In order to measure the lag of the member 12 with respect to the rotating field ferromagnetic members 20, 23 on the body 12 and magnet 18 co-operate with respective pick-ups 21, 22 to produce electrical signals. These signals act through a bi-stable circuit to connect one or other side of a voltage source to a resistor through which a capacitor is charged or discharged. The voltage across the capacitor is compared with that of a tap on a potentiometer connected across the voltage source to give an analogue read-out. Photo-electric sensing means may be used. If magnet 18 is an electromagnet the energization of the magnet may be adjusted in accordance with the output of a temperature sensor immersed in the fluid to compensate for changes in viscosity due to temperature variations.
