Abstract

1,209,784. Transformers. ESQUIRE Inc. 28 Nov., 1967 [14 June, 1967], No. 54136/67. Heading H1T. A toroid transformer is contained in a shell which has a passage through the core and encapsulating material surrounding the transformer and open to the atmosphere at both ends to promote heat dissipation. In the embodiment shown, cylindrical easing 14 has a stepped bottom portion containing an opening for duct 28, and has legs 18 to 21, which retain transformer coils 84 to 87. A frame member 12 comprises radial open-ended ducts 38 to 41 converging centrally at a longitudinal duct 34. A flexible, insulating conduit (30) (Fig. 2, not shown) extends through the core 82 and joins ducts 34 and 28, providing one longitudinal and four radial openings for air passage through the casing. A cover plate 50 is fixed to frame 12 by a gasket (66, Fig. 3, not shown). Encapsulating material, such as rock-resin aggregate, completely surrounds the transformer and extends into frame 12 above ducts 38 to 41 to provide a fluid-tight chamber for terminals (72, 74, Fig. 2) which are supported in the material and connect the transformer to external leads (not shown) passing through outlets 46, 47. An embodiment for a three-phase transformer or three transformers (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) comprises a shell (102) having a central longitudinal air passage (122) passing through the encapsulated transformer core(s). The shell has a cover (104) on one side spaced from the encapsulation to define a terminal chamber.
