Abstract
1,208,593. Developing latent electrostatic images. RANK XEROX Ltd. Dec. 29, 1967 [Jan. 3, 1967], No.59082/67. Heading G2H. In an apparatus for developing latent electrostatic images using a fluidized bed of developer in contact with the image, toner is replenished from a briquette 34 of compacted toner particles. Untoned carrier particles in the fluidized bed abrade the briquette 34 to replace toner particles depleted from the development of images. In a modification, two briquettes (42), Fig. 3 (not shown) are urged inwardly by springs (46). A developing electrode (28) in the form of a mesh screen is biased or grounded to reduce background and assist solid area development. An assembly (14) Fig. 1 (not shown) forming the development zone is oscillated about shaft 12 by a motor 24 to cause fluidization as described in Specification 1,193,443. The developer may be fluidized by oscillations parallel to shaft (12) or by vertical or horizontal oscillations towards and away from drum (10).
