Abstract
1,196,637. Developing electrostatic images. RANK XEROX Ltd. Oct. 6, 1967 [Oct.11, 1966], No. 45730/67. Heading G2H. An electrostatic latent image on a drum 10 is cascade developed by a developer having a toner and carrier supplied in random manner by buckets 14 to full under gravity between plates 20, 22. A development electrode 26 of conductive material is biased by a potential source 32 to the same polarity as the image areas and opposite to that of the toner, the potential being higher than that of the non-image areas such that toner is attracted away from such non-image areas to reduce background. A second electrode 28 biased to a high potential, e.g. 1500 volts and of opposite polarity to the toner particles attracts clouds of toner formed by the cascading toner some of which accumulates on the electrode while the remainder is drawn into the flow of the cascading carrier particles. In another embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) a development electrode (36) and a second electrode (40) are mounted on a member (38) and connected to separate potentials. A baffle (46) carries a biased insulating layer (50) and plate 48 to collect toner which has fallen beyond the electrode (40).
