Abstract

1,207,904. I. C, engine cylinder heads. USTAV PRO VYZKUM MOTOROVYCH VOZIDEL. Oct. 31, 1968 [Nov.22, 1967], No.51724/68. Heading F1B. In a cylinder head for an internal combustion engine the inlet and exhaust passages 9, 10 have a helical curvature in the same sense so that the swirl imparted to the air/fuel mixture is maintained in the exhaust gases leaving through passage 10. Where the passages 9, 10 intersect with the hubs 3 of their respective valve guides 4 each passage has a wall curvature which is generally spherical, as shown at 2, or ellipsoidal, the centre 1 of the sphere or ellipsoid being displaced from the axis of the valve guide by an amount ei in the case of the inlet passage 9 and by a different amount e 2 in the case of the exhaust passage 10. The wall curvature is faired into the valve guide hub 3 at 5. In the arrangement shown the passages 9, 10 open at the same side of the cylinder head and eccentricity e 2 is greater than e 1 , but in a modification, Fig.4 (not shown), the passages 9, 10 open on opposite sides of the head and e 2 is less than e 1 .
