Abstract

[Also in Division D1] An apparatus for successively carbonizing, subjecting to vacuum, and graphitizing polyacrylonitrile filaments is divided in gas-tight manner into at least two successive treatment compartments by at least one partition which comprises a pair of wall structures having a gap therebetween sealed by a pair of nip rollers having a surface of elastomeric material. As shown, an apparatus 10 is divided into three compartments 11, 12 and 13 by similar partitions 14 and 15. Partition 14 comprises wall members 34 and 35 having elastomeric flaps 30 and 31 separated by nip rollers 25 and 26. Each flap may be urged into contact with the adjacent roller by an inflated tube (Fig. 4). The ends of each roller may have disc-shaped (40, Fig. 2) or frusto-conical-shaped (42, Fig. 3) washers. In operation, polyacrylonitrile filaments in the form of a continuous sheet 22 are carbonized in a nitrogen atmosphere at 1600‹ C. in compartment 11, are subjected to a vacuum in chamber 12, and are graphitized in an argon atmosphere at 2500‹ C. in compartment 13.
