1,206,771. Transparent coatings. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Jan., 1968 [7 Feb., 1967], No. 5840/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C7] A process for providing a surface of a sheet plastics article with a hard transparent coating comprises exposing the surface under vaccum to the emission caused to be admitted from at least one of a refractory oxide, carbide, silicide, nitride, or boride and/or a glass by bombarding it with accelerated electrons under vacuum. The sheet plastics article may be a transparent sheet or film such as a sheet of methyl methacrylate polymer. Numerous suitable refractory compounds are specified. The plastics article may first be coated with a thin, transparent primer coating, which may be of a metal such as copper, aluminium or nickel. Such metallic coating may be up to 300Š thick.
