Abstract

1,206,446. Electrostatic charging apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Sept.29, 1967 [Oct. 3, 1966], No. 44442/67. Heading G2H. [Also in Division H1] A corona charging apparatus for altering, removing or neutralizing electrostatic charge on the surface of an insulating material comprises an earthed backing electrode 90 Fig. 1, a control screen 93, a plurality of corona electrodes 92 between the electrode 90 and screen, and a shield 94 for shielding a web 95 of light sensitive material from the corona electrodes 94. In another embodiment, a web 99, Fig. 2, having positive and negative charges on each surface thereof is fed between corona devices 100, 101, 102 and 103. Each device 100, 101, 102 and 103 has respectively backing electrodes 104, 105, 106, 107 control screens 112, 113, 114, 115, corona wires 108, 109, 110 and 111 and light shields 116, 117, 118 and 119. The corona wires may be connected to -15kv and +15kv supplies as shown, while the control screens are earthed. In another embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown), the light shield comprises flat plates (130-133) of insulating material, the plates 130-132 having differently biased conductor strips (138-140). Alternatively, the shield may be of L shaped members (150) Fig. 6 (not shown).
