Abstract
1,205,928. Making travelling wave tube helices; coiling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 23 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 19661, No. 53638/66. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Division H1] A travelling wave tube helix is made by winding a copper wire 2 on to an iron mandrel 1, spraying the wound wire with insulating material 4 to keep the turns spaced apart and chemically removing the mandrel. The copper wire turns may be spaced by a helically-wound iron wire 3 which is removed with the mandrel. The iron is dissolved in hydrochloric acid which does not react with the copper. The insulating material is alumina, berylia or a metal oxide such as magnesium applied by a flame spray gun or a plasma gun. The tube helix is mounted in a sealed glass sleeve (6), Fig. 4 (not shown), between an anode (8) and an electron gun (7).
