Abstract

1,204,387. Automatic voltage control. DYNAMIC INSTRUMENT CORP. Nov.25, 1967, No.53718/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Divisions G1 and H2] A battery charging system comprises a pressure sensitive transducer responsive to the pressure of the gas produced in the battery during the charging process thereby to control the charging current and hence the production of gas. The transducer 10 comprises a body portion 11 affixed to a battery 17 together with a diaphragm 22 carrying a carbon disc 24 which discs cooperate with terminals 25, 26 to form a resistor the resistance of which varies with pressure of the gas in the battery 17 on the diaphragm 22. An orifice 20 is provided to prevent damage should the gas-pressure become excessive. The charging apparatus comprises a generator 27 having a field winding 29 controlled by a regulating device 34, 44, 45, the operation of which is determined by the transducer resistive element which is connected in parallel with a resistor 36 in series with the operating coil 34 of the field regulator. Initially, with a low gas-pressure in the battery 17, the diaphragm 22 will be in its normal condition and the resistance of the transducer will be infinite. In this condition the regulator 34, 44, 45 will operate to produce maximum output from the generator 27 and thus, maximum charging current. As the gas-pressure in the battery 17 rises the resistance of the transducer gradually decreases thereby causing the regulator 34, 44, 45 to operate such that the generator 27 produces a decreasing charging current until a stable charging and gas producing process is attained. The state of charge of the battery 17 is reflected in the value of charging current required to maintain a given gas-pressure in the battery during charging. Thus an ammeter 38 may be connected in the charging circuit and calibrated in terms of the state of charge. In other embodiments the charging apparatus may comprise conventional voltage control, current control and cut-out devices or may comprise a three phase generator/ rectifier device with a control arrangement including transistors.
