Abstract

1,204,882. Automatic voltage control. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Jan.26,1968 [Feb.6,1967], No.5566/67. Heading G3R. A voltage regulator for the battery-charging generator 11 of a road vehicle includes a transistor 29 connected in series with the generator field winding 31, the transistor 29 being controlled, over a transistor 27, by a further transistor 25 associated with a voltage sensing circuit connected across the terminals of the battery 15 and comprising resistors 21, 22, 24 and a Zener diode 23. Such a regulator of the general type shown in Fig.1 operates in known manner and normally includes a thermistor or the like to provide compensation for temperature variations; but in the present instance, to ensure that regulation varies with temperature in a predetermined desired manner, the resistance value of resistor is especially chosen and matched to the characteristics of the transistor 25 to achieve the desired effect. Thus the usual thermistor is not required and the Specification gives suitable values for various components of the circuit. The actual nature of the variation of regulated voltage with temperature can take a variety of forms, and a modification giving twostage characteristic is described with reference to Fig.2 (not shown).
