Abstract

939,851. Automatic voltage control. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. April 14, 1960 [April 15, 1959], No. 13358/60. Class 38 (4). The output voltage of a shunt-excited generator A supplying a battery B is maintained constant by controlling the resistance of a transistor 20, connected in series with a field F of the generator, by a directly-connected control transistor 25. The emitter-base bias of the control transistor is determined by a Zenerdiode 30 connected to a tapping 40 of a voltage divider comprising resistors 41, 42, 26. The transistor 25 is maintained alternately conducting and non-conducting by a feedback path through a resistor 37 and a capacitor 36. The voltage of the generator is reduced above a limiting current by the voltage drop across a resistor 12, through a potential divider 60, 61, causing a diode 57 to conduct and vary the base bias to the control transistor 25. The control characteristics are varied in dependence on the ambient temperature by temperature responsive resistors 50, 55. The resistor 50 is increased in value by a reduction in temperature to cause an increase in output voltage. The resistor 55 causes the current limiting to be effective at a higher value with reduction in temperature to allow for the increased maximum output at low ambient temperatures. A heating coil 35 for the Zener diode 30 compensates for the reduction in the dynamo voltage due to an increase in the load current.
