Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and E1- E2] In a method of attaching a handle to a container or a blank to be made into a container without perforating the container or blank a handle having two eyes is fitted over bosses which have been provided on a can &c., the ends of the bosses are later provided with enlargements. In one form metal bosses 5 with stems 7 and open ends 7a (shown dashed) are fitted to an imperforate container. A handle 11 is located with its eyes 12 on the stems 7. Subsequently channels 10 are formed by flaring the open ends 7a of the bosses. In a modification the handle 11 is retained in position by a removable hollow metal or plastics plug (19), Fig. 4 (not shown), pushed into each hollow boss. The bosses 5 may alternatively be solid, whereupon the handle 11 is retained by, e.g. riveting the end 7a, so forming a head. The handle may be of sheet metal, Fig. 7 (not shown), or plastics. The bosses may be attached to an imperforate sheetmetal blank before forming the imperforate container.
