Abstract
1,202,992. Electro-refining copper. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. July 3, 1968 [July 3, 1967], No.31728/68. Heading C7B. Copper of low oxygen content, e.g. 6 ppm, is obtained by cathodic electro-deposition at a current density of 20 to 400 amps/sq. ft. from a copper plating bath containing additionally 0À001 to 5 ozs/U.S. gallon of xylose, arabinose, ribose or lyxose or a mixture of two or more of these pentoses which is supplied with copper from a copper anode containing oxygen. The copper plating bath may be of the sulphate, fluoborate, pyrophosphate or free cyanide type. Reference is also made to the use of copper baths containing sulphate and oxalate with or without boric acid, and to chloridesodium thiosulphate baths. Deposition may be effected on to stainless steel cathodes from which the copper is melted off under an inert atmosphere to form low oxygen ingots, or on to undersize objects followed if desired by machining to precise dimensions.
