Abstract

1,202,829. Needle felt. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 21 April, 1969 [22 April, 1968], No. 20150/69. Heading D1R. Needle felt having a high mechanical strength a dimensional stability is produced by working with needles or pins one or more fibrous webs obtained by fibrillating a film predominantly consisting of polypropylene. Preferably the fibres of the web are mainly interconnected to form a network. Alternatively the web may consist completely of loose fibres. Suitably stretching ratios of the film before fibrillation are between 1:3 and 1:20 and a thickness of 0.01-0.2 mm is usual. Needling may be applied to a stack of fibrous webs in which all the webs are orientated in the same or different directions. Binding agents such as pulverulent polyethylene may be applied before or after needling. A web of crimped fibres may be obtained by the fibrillation of laminates in which all the layers are polypropylene or some are e.g. polyethylene, copolymers of propylene and ethylene, polyesters and polyamides.
