Abstract

1,202,717. Stress limiting devices. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 15 March, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12573/67. Heading B8B. A power cable 24 extending between a fixed power source and a movable coal mining machine, is hauled along the coal face by the resilient equipment shown, the outer casing 10 of which is mounted on the machine and any excessive tension in the cable 24 is relieved by the resilient equipment up to a point where the machine is automatically switched off. A cable grip 22 is connected to a rod 18 slidable within a tube 14 and including a piston 30 which compresses a spring 42 against an abutment 40 in the tube 14, when the cable 24 is tensioned. With increase in cable tension above a pre-determined limit, the mining machine is switched off via chains 44, 50 and adjuster 46 coupled to the piston 30. Any further increase in cable tension due to overrun of the machine causes a cam 32 on the rod 18 to actuate pawls 34 which permit the tube 14 to slide out of the tubular casing 10 to further release tension in the cable. A further spring may be connected to the chain 50 to facilitate further machine overrun without chain breakage. In a modification the spring 42 is replaced by either a rubber spring or a stack of spring washers.
