[Also in Divisions B8, F2] In a telescopic column, for supporting a seat or table at an adjustable height, the space above a liquid 20, in the hollow plunger 4, is filled, through valved nipple 21, with compressed air and the flow of liquid to the outer cylinder 5 is controlled by a valve 11. On opening valve 11, the air may be allowed to expand and displace the liquid to raise the plunger 4 or, alternatively, the flow of liquid may be reversed by downward manual pressure exerted on the plunger. In a modification the air space communicates with an additional annular compressed air reservoir (22, Fig. 3, not shown).
