[Also in Divisions B8, E2, F2 and H4] A support device allowing height adjustment and rotation of a member to be supported, e.g. a chair seat, table top, or a microphone, comprises a cylinder 23 secured to the member to be supported and coaxially movable telescopically into and out of a liquid filled space 29 in a cylinder 22, a valve 34 in the base of cylinder 23 controlling liquid flow between the space 29 and a space 30 in the cylinder 23, the upper wall of the space 30 being a spring-loaded piston 31. The cylinder 22 is rotatably supported in a fixed cylinder 21 by a spring 36. With the valve closed, the cylinder 23 and its load are locked at a selected height and supported by the liquid in space 29. Rotation of a rod 28 and a cam 26 urges a rod 27 against a spring 32 to open the valve 34 to allow liquid flow from space 30 to space 29 under the force of spring 32 to raise the member to be supported, or to allow flow from space 29 to space 30 under a downward force Z on the member to be supported to lower the latter. The valve 34 comprises a plug 25 controlling a small orifice (40) (Fig. 3, not shown) in flanged diaphragm (37) seating against a seal 33 and axially movable on the valve rod 27. With flow from space 29 to space 30, pressure holds the diaphragm (37) against seal 33 and flow is via the small orifice (40). With flow in the opposite direction, the liquid pressures move the diaphragm downwardly to close orifices (40) and open a larger annular channel between the diaphragm flange and the seal 33 for a greater flow rate. A simpler embodiment, (Fig. 1, not shown) has an external spring (20) urging the movable cylinder (C) out of the base cylinder (B), and no internal springs.
