A mechanism for forming a fibrous web comprises a breast roll 11 with a suction gland 12 within it, a press roll 15 with a suction gland 17 within it, spaced slightly from the breast roll, an endless forming wire 10 wrapped under tension around both rolls, an endless felt 16 wrapped around the press roll beneath the wire, and means 13 depositing a fibrous slurry on the wire opposite the suction gland in the breast roll. As shown, there are two suction glands 17 and 18 within the press roll, the second applying greater suction than the first; a saveall 19 catches water flung centrifugally from the wire; and the web is carried by the felt 16 from, the press roll 15 to the nip between further press rolls 24 and 25 of which the latter has a suction gland 27, then by the roll 24 to its nip with a press roll 26 with a suction gland 28 and a felt 29. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the coach and first press rolls are horizontally opposite each other and the saveall beneath them, and the felt carries the web directly from the press roll to a Yankee drier, on to which it is pressed by a second press roll with a suction gland within it.
