Abstract

1,266,967. Papermaking apparatus. BELOIT CORP. 14 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 24657/69. Heading D2A. A web pickup arrangement comprises a forming wire, for receiving stock to form a web, arranged to travel over a couch roll and then down an inclined run 11a; a looped pickup belt 14; a suctionpickup roll 15 within the loop, urging the pickup belt into contact with the forming wire at a pickup point; a looped press felt 30 having a substantially horizontal top run 30a; a guide roll 31a within the loop and mounted just beneath the pickup belt so that the belt and felt travel together without being pressed together to receive the web at a transfer point, the web and the belt travelling directly between the pickup point and the transfer point without additional support, and without passing through a press nip, the belt being turned directly off the inclined wire run at the pickup point and carried onto the substantially horizontal top felt run at the transfer point by the belt, and a first press nip receiving the press felt with the web, the pickup belt leaving the press felt prior to the press nip. The pickup roll preferably has a suction area extending from the pickup point to the transfer point. One of the press rolls, preferably at the bottom, may be grooved, and has a suction gland. The suction pickup roll may be swingably mounted on front and back framing means to move the pickup roll away from the pickup point, towards the interior of the felt loop to facilitate pickup belt change. This belt may be a wire-cloth or a felt. The framing may also swingably mount the guide roll for the press felt loop. When the pickup roll is removed, the machine may be operated without this roll, the web passing over an open draw, possibly with the aid of a small roll.
