Abstract

1,196,471. Photo-electric devices. ASSOCIATED SEMICONDUCTORS MFRS. Ltd. 8 March, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 17257/67. Heading H1K. The container for a photo-electric device 4 comprises an inner member, having a support surface 2 for the device and a hollow skirt 1 extending therefrom, positioned within an outer sealed member having double walls 7 and 8. The copper lead wires soldered to the device 4 by suitably doped indium solder are led out between the skirt 1 and wall 7. A heat sink or refrigerating means may be provided within the skirt whose free end 3 may be curved outwardly. The wires may be connected to pins 15 in a holder 16 by soldering and the gap between the skirt and the outer member is sealed by a filler material 17 such as resin, silicone resin or silicone rubber, loaded with particles of high thermal conductivity material such as aluminium oxide. Windows 10 and 11 of suitable materials, such as synthetic sapphire, germanium or silicon for devices sensitive to infra-red or glass for those sensitive to visible light, are provided, and layers 18 of aluminium either painted on or vacuum deposited to act as shields. The space between the walls of the outer member may be evacuated, filled with a gas such as nitrogen, or partly filled with polystyrene foam. The device 4 is mounted on a carrier 5 of high density alumina. In a further embodiment a layer of plastics material coats the skirt 1 either in the form of a continuous layer or a number of discrete rings, and may be provided with grooves to accommodate the wires 12 which may be secured in position with the aid of adhesive.
