Abstract

1,195,711. Printing apparatus. CRABTREEMANN Ltd. 2 April, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 16888/67. Heading B6C. Printing plate 8, which may be of the lithographic type, is held at its trailing edge, or at both of its trailing and leading edges, by clamping devices inset into the surface of cylinder 13 and each comprising a clamping element 1 made up of separate jaw-bearing parts 1A, 1B which are arranged end to end and may be displaced relative to one another to reduce the clearances 17 between them and so compress plate 8. The plate 8 is secured between upper jaws 2, 3 and lower jaws 5, 6. Preferably element 1 is made up of three parts, the central part 1B being fixed to cylinder 13 and the outer parts 1A and 1C being movable towards and away from it. Outer part 1A has oversized bores for studs 14 and collared jacking screws 11, which are threaded into cylinder 13 and respectively locate element 1 and move it to tension plate 8 after plate 8 has been gripped between the jaws by tightening of screws 10, which are threaded into lower jaws 5, 6. Screw 21 and eccentric 22 on bridge 18 are released before part 1A is moved by screw 23, then resecured. To return part 1A to its original position screw 23 is turned until it is clear of abutment 24 and eccentric 22, which incorporates a cam acting on the inner surface of a slot in bridge 18, is turned with a tommy-bar. Inward lateral deformation of plate 8 at its trailing edge, by inward movement of the outer parts of clamping element 1, may be made to compensate for the distortion of material printed on which takes place while an image is being applied to it, and so facilitates retention of register when multiple images are successively applied in multicolour printing.
