Abstract
1,195,568. Foamed polydienes. TRW Inc. 15 Aug., 1967 [26 Aug., 1966], No. 37439/67. Headings C3C and C3P. [Also in Division B2] A foam is obtained by (1) preparing a mixture of a polydiene containing at least two functional groups and a major proportion of pendant vinyl or isopropenyl groups on alternate carbon atoms on the backbone carbon chain, a chain extender capable of reacting with the functional groups of the polydiene, a peroxide free-radical initiator, and discrete hollow particles, (2) causing the mixture to react by chain extension to form an elastomeric resin containing the initiator and the hollow particles homogeneously dispersed throughout, and optionally (3) curing the elastomeric material to form a rigid thermoset foam by heating. Suitable polydienes are dicarboxy or dihydroxy 1,2-polybutadiene or 3,4- polyisoprene. Suitable chain extenders include diisocyanates, diacids, diacid halides, diesters, dianhydrides, diols, diamines, diepoxides, diimines, and diimides. Suitable hollow particles are microballoons of glass, plastic or metal. The foam may be obtained by using small amounts of the polydiene mixture so that coated hollow particles are obtained in the first stage, the particles being joined together to form a foam in the thermosetting stage.
