Abstract

1,191,915. Accumulator drum. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 14 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 52010/67. Heading D1F. An accumulator for temporarily storing wire comprises a driven drum 3 that is supported at one end and has a driven wire paying off flier 18 at the other end, the arrangement being such that whilst wire is being wound onto the drum by an input guide 4, wire can be fed off the drum via the flier 18. A screw threaded collar 24 may act on a spring 23 to press the flier 18 against a friction disc 22 at the end of drum 3, the pressure of the spring 23 being preferably set such that the flier rotates at a speed slightly less than that of the drum 3 which may be driven by a handle 17. The flier and the drum could be driven from the same or different electric motors and the various drivers intercoupled or the various motors controlled to drive the apparatus as described. The input guide 4 may be mounted on a traverse screw 14 driven by the drive to the drum 3. In a modified construction the drum is traversed relative to the guide 4. Alternatively the drum 3 is formed with a helical groove so that the wire is automatically distributed. Wire drawn from flier 18 passes between vertical rollers 10, 11 under L-shaped guides. The wire may be driven into the guide 4 by means which stops the drum 3 if the tension of the wire on the input side falls to a low value.
