Abstract

1,036,452. Unwinding. KANTHAL A.B. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 5, 1962; Aug. 22, 1962], No. 4686/63. Heading B3E. A device for unwinding wire from a comparatively large storage unit comprises means adapted to rotate the storage unit, means for sensing the tension under which the wire is conducted to a following machine fed by the wire and electrically controlled means for varying the number of revolutions of the driving means in dependence on the tension as determined by said sensing means to keep the tension as constant as possible. Wire passes from a drum 61, rotated and braked by a motor 65, over upper pulleys 69, on a pivoted spring-urged arm 67, and lower pulleys 71 to a coiling machine. A tube 72 on the arm 67 is connected by a divided friction brake bushing in a bearing box 73 with a rod 75 an arm 76 of which actuates a switch controlling a variable resistor 79. In operation, the motor 65 is fed with A.C. to start rotation of the drum 61. When the drum 61 has reached a speed to overfeed the wire the arm 67 tilts sufficiently to cause the switch 77 to cut off the #AÀC. supply and connect a D.C. supply to the motor 65 which then begins to act as a brake, the braking effort being controlled by the variable resistor 79. When the coiling machine is stopped by pressing a button, the D.C. circuit to the motor 65 is broken and the circuit of an electromagnetic brake 86 is closed.
