In a dual reel apparatus of the kind in which when one reel 1 is full the yarn or wire being wound is transferred to the second reel 2, the two take-up reel supports are driven by a common fixed speed motor 9 via individual slipping clutches 10, 11 there being sensing means 29-31 to vary the degree of slip of which ever clutch is at any instant being used to drive the reel, support, on which yarn is being wound so as to ensure constant take up speed. The sensing means is responsive to the rate of take up of the yarn or wire by the reel support being wound. In the particular embodiment the clutches are magnetic clutches and the sensing means is part of an accumulator for the yarn or wire such that if the accumulator commences to store yarn or wire beyond a predetermined amount it causes a corresponding adjustment of the appropriate clutch to increase the speed of take up; and if the accumulator commences to pay out yarn or wire beyond a predetermined amount it causes a corresponding adjustment of the appropriate clutch to decrease the speed of take un. Shogger plates 5, 6 are mounted between adjacent co-axial reels and a traversing lever, Fig. 2 (not shown), is provided that can switch from one take up reel to the other.
