1,188,971. Press frames; extruding; welding by fusion. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO Ltd. 26 Jan., 1968 [28 Jan., 1967], No. 4332/67. Headings B3A, B3H, B3R and B3P. A frame, particularly for an extrusion or forging press or a shears, comprises end members 12, 13 welded to columns 14, 15, one at least of the end members being a casting with integral stub columns 20. An extrusion press frame has a cast or fabricated plate 12 for carrying the extrusion die, and a cast or fabricated cylinder end 13 for the main press ram. Both parts 12, 13 have integral stub columns 20, 25 with end flanges 21. One or two upper columns 14 and two lower columns 15 of rectangular cross-section are made by forging, casting or welding and have end flanges 27 welded thereto. The surfaces of the columns are machined. These columns are welded to the stub columns by electroslag welding or by the " Thermit " process (Registered Trade Mark). Thereafter, the flanges 21, 27 are removed and the lower columns 15 have bronze wearing plates fitted into dovetail recesses (28), Fig. 3 (not shown).
