Abstract

1,040,094. Making rolling mill frames; welding by fusion. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 29, 1965 [April 29, 1964], No. 17725/64. Headings B3A, B3M and B3R. A bulbous portion is formed on a rolling mill frame by electroslag welding a plate or block to the frame and machining away waste metal. Two U-shaped frames 11, 11A (Fig. 2, not shown) are spaced apart and located on their sides and a plate 15 of substantially the same thickness as the bases of the frames 11, 11A is interposed and secured by welding to blocks 16, 16A which are welded to the frames so that gaps are left between the ends of the plate 15 and the frames 11, 11A. Each end of the plate is electroslag welded to the associated frame by a machine using a fixed water-cooled copper shoe 18 (Fig. 3, not shown), a movable water-cooled copper shoe 19 and a plurality of electrodes reciprocated transversely. Subsequently the plate is parted, the frames are interchanged and the operations are repeated using a second plate 1S. After parting the second plate, the plate portions and welds are machined to shape and the resulting bulbous portions are bored. The bulbous portions may accommodate the mill screwdown members.
