Abstract

1,187,832. Apparatus for cleaning and modifying the surface of metals; barrel plating. HOCKLEY CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. Feb. 9, 1968 [Feb.16, 1967], No.7375/67. Headings C7B; C7E and C7U. Articles to be cleaned, phosphated, chromated or electro-plated are fed through a series of drums 10 to 15, each of which dips into a tank 19, by means of hollow spindles 21. The drums are oscillated to agitate the articles in the tanks, but when they are completely rotated a flap (see Fig.2, not shown) in the drum causes the articles to fall into the adjacent spindle 21 which conveys them to the adjacent drum. A hood 18 has removable, transparent panels 30, and the drums may be of stainless steel or polypropylene. The apparatus may be controlled by electro-switches. The drums are aligned axially by adjustable rollers 25. When used for electro-plating, anodes may be suspended in the tanks and cathodic connections may be "danglers" or inter-connected studs, the electrical connections being by brush gear in the outside of the hollow spindles.
