Abstract

[Also in Division G2] Sheet photographic material is prepared by coating an aqueous composition containing a hydrophilic colloid at a rate greater than 100 ft. per minute onto a dried hydrophilic colloid layer formed by a previous operation, the dried layer having been formed from an aqueous composition containing a polyalkylene oxide condensation product which increases the hydrophilic nature of the air surface of the layer when dried. The dried layer may be a gelatine layer, a pigmented layer, e.g. a baryta layer, or a light sensitive layer, e.g. a photographic emulsion on which is to be coated a layer of a hydrophilic colloid such as a filter layer or a protective layer. The aqueous composition containing the polyalkylene oxide condensation product may be coated onto a support, e.g. a paper support, or it may be coated onto another layer of a hydrophilic colloid. The sheet photographic material may comprise a photographic silver halide paper, e.g. silver bromide, chloride or chlorobromide paper, wherein a light sensitive photographic emulsion is coated say at a rate greater than 200 ft. per minute onto one or more supported baryta layers, at least the top baryta layer containing the polyalkylene oxide condensation product. The layer coated onto the dried layer may also be an insensitive layer, such as a nucleated layer for use in the silver salt transfer process, a plain gelatine layer, or an anti-halation layer. Suitable condensation products are condensation products of an alkylene oxide containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms with a straight or branched chain alcohol or an alkyl phenol, the product containing from 4 to 15 condensed alkylene oxide units.
